Job Profile: Bakers

421356

Bakers typically work in bakeries, manufacturing facilities, grocery stores, and restaurants making baked goods such as breads and pastries. Many work shifts in the early morning, late evening, and on holidays and weekends. Most bakers learn their skills through long-term on-the-job training, so formal education and previous experience are not required. However, some bakers-in-training may attend a culinary or technical school, which may give them an advantage in finding work. On average, bakers make $11.13 per hour.  The baking profession is expected to grow by 6% over the next ten years, slower than the national average, as automated machines are increasingly used to replace human personnel in bakeries.

Median Pay: $23,140 per year ($11.13 per hour)

Required Education: Less than High School

Required Experience: None

Job Outlook: 6 percent (slower than average)
