FAQs

What is BASSET?

Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training (BASSET) is a program established by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC). BASSET teaches alcohol servers and sellers how to maintain a safe and responsible alcohol service environment.

Who needs Illinois BASSET Training?

The Illinois Liquor Control Commission requires all on-premise alcohol servers in Illinois to complete BASSET training. This includes bartenders, waitstaff, managers and other personnel working in establishments such as bars, restaurants and hotels.

BASSET certification is also required for bouncers and other employees who check ID for alcohol service.

Is this course state-approved?

Yes. This course, including the exam, is approved for use throughout Illinois by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission for both On-Premise and Off-Premise BASSET Certification (License # 5A-1124536).

Is BASSET training required for both on-premises and off-premises establishments?

As of July 1, 2018, BASSET training is required for on-premises alcohol servers and employees who check ID for alcohol service. While BASSET training isn’t legally required for off-premises alcohol sellers, such as employees of liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores, it is highly recommended for any alcohol seller or server.

Does Illinois BASSET training expire?

Your official Illinois BASSET Card will be valid for three years. Your temporary alcohol server/seller card — available for instant download upon course completion — will be valid for 30 days. You will receive your official BASSET Card in the mail within these 30 days.

After the three-year period, you must retake the BASSET training course to renew your certification and remain compliant with ILCC regulations.

How long can I access the course?

All StateFoodSafety courses provide unlimited access to the course training videos for one year. Take the course at your own pace or return after completion to refresh your food safety knowledge.

What do I get when I finish this course?

You can instantly download your temporary alcohol server/seller certificate that’s valid for 30 days upon course completion. Your official Illinois BASSET card will be mailed to you within 30 days. Make sure to provide your current address to receive your official BASSET Card in the mail.

What topics are covered in BASSET training?

The BASSET training course covers various topics, including Illinois liquor laws and regulations, responsible alcohol service, identification verification, safe alcohol handling and recognizing signs of intoxication.

When do I need to complete my Illinois BASSET training?

Illinois BASSET training must be completed within 120 days of employment.

Do I need an Illinois food handlers card?

If your job duties involve serving or handling food, you must complete food safety training. Illinois requires all food employees to earn an Illinois food handlers card within 30 days of starting work. If you work with unpackaged food, food equipment, food utensils or food-contact surfaces, you need a food handlers card under the Illinois Food Handling Regulation Enforcement Act.

Our food handler courses are ANAB-accredited and state-approved to ensure you receive quality, up-to-date training information.
