This program’s purpose is to prepare food managers and food workers to control food allergens in their establishments.

Scope (effective 8/9/2021)
This program has been designed for food managers and food workers. This program will provide training and testing relevant to the major food allergens identified by the FDA, identifying allergens in the workplace, communicating with customers and coworkers, and preventing cross-contact.

Learning Objectives (effective 8/9/2021)
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Identify major food allergens. Identify food allergen cross-contact risks. 
  • Identify methods for preventing cross-contact. 
  • Determine how to communicate information about food allergen ingredients and allergen-free orders to coworkers and customers. 
  • Identify symptoms of allergic reactions and how to respond if one occurs in the workplace.

Who is required to take the Food Allergen Awareness Course?

All point-of-service workers, including servers, kitchen staff and managers, employed at a food establishment in Massachusetts must take a food allergen awareness course. The training includes a video on common allergies, how to identify them and safety protocols that help prevent adverse reactions to consumable goods. 

Is the StateFoodSafety Food Allergen Safety Training approved for my area?

Yes, our ANAB-accredited educational program is accepted by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for food employees throughout the entire state. 

When do I need to complete the training?

Food sellers, servers and managers must complete the course within 30 days of hire.

Upon completion of the program, you will receive a state-recognized Food Allergen Awareness Training Certificate.

What is a Food Allergen Awareness Training Certificate?

The certificate serves as proof of completion for the state-mandated food allergen awareness program and demonstrates your understanding of basic allergy reaction prevention.

How long is my certificate valid for?

Certificates are valid for five years. Food service professionals in Massachusetts must retake the course if they wish to continue working in the food industry after their certification expires. 

How can I access my certificate of completion? 

To view, print or get additional copies of your current certificate after completing the program, log into your account and go to the “Certificates” section. From there, click on the “View” tab to download your document.

How long can I access the course?

How do I renew my Massachusetts Food Allergens Safety Training?
